Mardi Gras is here and
people all over the USA (not just in Louisiana) are celebrating with
parades and parties. The celebrations don't stop until Tuesday, March 4th, so there is plenty of time for you to join in the fun! To get you in the spirit, Sam and Sofia have sent you a Mardi Gras Float

We finally saw snow in NC this week so I decided to design a few Snow themed activity pages for my daughter.

This was the first snow that we have experienced at home as a family of Five so we enjoyed a relaxing Snow day at home together. We spent time outdoors throwing snowball and enjoyed puzzles, hot
chocolate, and movies inside.
Our read aloud for this week is the third book in the Magic Tree House
series, "Mummies in the Morning". I look around and found a few Halloween themed
worksheets, but nothing specific to Mummies or Egypt, so I decided to
make a subtraction worksheet to match the theme of the book .
We decided to do a quick and simple chemistry project with Azilee over the weekend. I had pinned this Baking Soda and Vinegar project a while back and decided to try it out. The pin originally stated it would blow the bag in the air like a rocket which I thought would be neat since our theme this week is stars, planets, and outer space. Our packets did not blow up in the air but it was still a neat reaction to watch and experience.
We only did a brief unit on Indians this year for Prek. We were only able to find a few books at our library that were on a young enough level for her. We did take a quick trip to the Cherokee Indian Reservation which is what interested Princess enough for us to form this small unit. We hope to return for a longer visit and do a larger unit next year. This year we only drove through and stopped long enough for Princess to watch Indian dancers do a mini performance. She was able to participate in the friendship dance which she enjoyed. We also plan to go watch the Cherokee dance team preform at our countrys Labor Day festival this weekend. I will add those pictures at the end as well.
Activities:
We visited the creek where Princess splashed and "swam". She pretended to be a frog jumping from lily pad to lily pad (rock to rock). She also "swam" like a fish and pretended to be a duck. *Try to post picture later*
We watched several Youtube videos throughout the week. Some we would start then move on to something else. I didn't copy and paste most of them but you can easily do a search for Ponds,frogs,salamanders and find more videos for this unit. I did list some of them below including a few that included children songs that Princess enjoyed.
We visited the Pisgah Fish Hatchery (details below) & read many books on the topic.
We also did a few art projects that I need to take pictures of and upload.
This is my turtle. (Make fist, extend thumb) He lives in a shell. (Hide thumb in fist) He likes his home very well. He pokes his head out when he wants to eat. (Extend thumb) And pulls it back when he wants to sleep.

Field Trip:
We spent an afternoon at the Pisgah Fish Hatchery. We went later in the evening then our normal time so the fish were not jumping/eating as much as we have seen them do in the past. This visit they had lots of baby fish and several varieties including Brown & Rainbow Trout. You can visit the Water Runs where the fish grow and are feed (purchase food out of the dispensers for $0.25) and walk a short nature trail that brings you back to the building. They show a wildlife movie throughout the day in the visitors center and also have a viewing area attached to the NC. Wildlife gift shop where you can view a mini water run with tiny fish, a turtle, frogs and several other small wildlife. They also have a marsh area set up behind the water ways where you can view and observe the water changes and some wildlife. During the viewing you get to stand on/under a pretty Gazebo that my father in law built :)
